As you may know, Gov. Pillen has called a special legislative session to address property tax issues starting July 25. The plan released to the public includes taxing massage therapy as a personal service at 5.5%.
As we all know, Nebraska Massage Therapy is a health care profession and Nebraska does not tax health care. In fact, massage therapy is the only health care profession listed for taxation in the governor's plan.
We are working diligently with National AMTA Gov Relations team and our lobbyists to have massage therapy removed from the plan prior to bill introduction next week. Today this letter is being delivered to the governor's office and revenue committee explaining we are health care. Our understanding is the Nebraska State Board of Massage Therapy will be releasing a statement by end of week we will also be able to share with the governor and revenue committee.
If we are unable to have massage therapy removed from the upcoming bills, we will need your help in calling, emailing, and testifying with very short notice. Senators will check in and introduce bills July 25, 26, and 27 with public hearings on those bills beginning July 29. This will give us only 2-4 days notice before hearings and we will need a strong and quick response, so please keep a lookout in your emails and social media for updates.
